Frequently Asked Questions
Access to TULSA is provided by four commercial online vendors: Dialog, EBSCOhost, Ovid Technologies, and STN International. Each of the vendors maintains a Web site with database access. To search the TULSA database, you must have an account with at least one of these online vendors.
An Online Service subscription with Petroleum Abstracts authorizes you to access the TULSA database with abstracts on EBSCOhost, Ovid Technologies, STN International or Dialog. You also need to have an account with one or more of these online vendors. Subscribers must provide their vendor ID number(s) to PA, which will then authorize access to TULSA. Please contact PA for annual Online Service subscription fees and more information about subscribing. Companies that do not have an Online Service subscription may search a version of TULSA without abstracts for up to two hours per year.
Contact information for the online vendors that provide access to TULSA is available on their Web sites: Dialog, Dialog DataStar, Ovid Technologies, EBSCOhost and STN. Please contact each vendor directly for its price and account information. Each vendor also provides its own schedule of access and retrieval rates for TULSA.
Online vendors offer different versions of TULSA for PA subscribers and nonsubscribers. Only the subscriber TULSA file contains abstracts. On STN International, the files are TULSA (subscribers) and TULSA2 (nonsubscribers). On Dialog, the TULSA files are File 986 (Dual Major Subscribers), File 987 (Major Subscribers without a PA Print Service subscription and General Subscribers) and File 87 (nonsubscribers).
Petroleum Abstracts Search Service (PASS) provides custom searches of the TULSA database on a fee basis. PASS charges standard fees for searching plus access and retrieval charges, depending on the amount of information you choose to receive. Please contact PA for details.
TULSA is updated weekly on all vendors. The Discovery file on AAPG Datapages is updated monthly.
Petroleum Abstracts Bulletin
The PA Bulletin is available in PDF, HTML and PostScript formats. Sample downloads are available.
How can I keep from searching through the whole Bulletin every week to find the entries that are important to me?
PA's PAnet Profile service selects the Bulletin material of interest to you and delivers it by e-mail weekly. You can specify the PA index terms for the material you want to see.
Okay, we confess. The weekly PA Bulletin isn't really weekly. It is published the first 50 weeks of the calendar year, so there are no issues 51 and 52. The University of Tulsa is closed for holidays during the last two weeks of the year.
Subscription and Payment
Annual search license fees for the Petroleum Abstracts Bulletin and TULSA are based on the petroleum-related assets of the subscribing company or organization, or on annual revenues for small companies or consultants. Educational institutions and government agencies receive special rates. Contact PA for current price lists.
PA does not offer individual subscriptions. Access to the database is available only by annual subscription on a companywide basis.
Exploration and Production companies with more than US$2 billion in petroleum-related assets and Service and Supply companies with more than US$250 million in petroleum-related assets subscribe to Petroleum Abstracts at Major Subscriber rates, shown on PA's current Major Subscriber Price List, available on request. Major subscribers include large oil and gas companies, service and supply companies, drilling contractors, pipeline companies and national oil ministries. All other companies and organizations subscribe at rates shown on PA's General Subscribers Price List, also available on request.
Yes. Universities and government agencies (other than national oil ministries) pay reduced annual subscription rates. Please see PA's General Subscribers Price List, available on request.

Petroleum Abstracts Document Delivery Service (PADDS)
The most efficient method of receiving documents via email is to submit your request using the Petroleum Abstracts Document Delivery Order Form. The link to this form is also on the left sidebar of the website. Electronic documents are sent in Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf).
After an order is processed, the pdf file can be placed on PA's web server. An encrypted "ticket" including the link information to the file is then sent to the customer. This ticket allows a single access and download of the document from PA's web site.
Contact PADDS for the appropriate form and details. The minimum deposit on account for document delivery is US$200. New PADDS customers are required to provide a valid credit card number or to establish a deposit account.
